/ˈaɪzəks/ (say 'uyzuhks)

Sir Isaac Alfred, 1855–1948, Australian jurist; chief justice of the High Court 1930–31; first Australian-born governor-general, 1931–36.
Isaac Isaacs graduated in law from Melbourne University in 1880 and was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Victoria from 1892 to 1901. A strong supporter of Federation, he represented Victoria at the Federal Convention of 1897. After Federation he was elected to the House of Representatives and was attorney-general in 1905–06 before being appointed to the High Court, where he was to remain for almost 25 years, becoming chief justice in 1930. His judgements were among the first to give explicit recognition to social considerations and he was a consistent advocate of the expansion of Commonwealth powers. On the recommendation of Prime Minister Scullin, Isaacs was appointed governor-general, despite the opposition of King George V.
